Impetus means the force or energy associated with a moving body. The perpetual motion of this work evokes that energy.
Two quotes are of note in the piece. The first is the ostinato from the Mission Impossible theme. I arrived at this while noodling at the piano, and after several attempts at finding a way around it, I decided to keep it. The second quote is a series of repeated descending half steps, from Samuel Barber’s Medea’s Dance of Vengeance. Both of these quotes have no special extramusical meaning. They simply fit naturally in the flow of the work.
