The introduction (measures 1-62) tells the story of events that may have taken place on
the first Christmas Eve. The rest of the piece tells of the three kings who were
following a star, but sought more directions, in addition to the star’s light, so they
could hurry to find the Christ child.
The Introduction may be done as a processional accompanied by a flautist who leads
the singers as they march to the stage, or who accompanies them while s/he is on the
stage awaiting their arrival.
After the Introduction, the music is supposed to start at a slow tempo and gradually
accelerate until measure 134. The frequent tempi marks are meant only to prevent the
speed from “running away.” Another piece that follows this procedure is, “Hospodipo
Millui,” performed in many Russian Orthodox Churches during Easter.
