The Demon Rising is about a very vivid personal experience I had while battling depression in college. While this work tells of the experience itself, As the Time Draws Nigh (for Female Voice and Chamber Orchestra) continues the story and describes how my depression was overcome.

Both works are in octatonic and begin with the same motive. This motive is developed to some degree in The Demon Rising, but textural development takes a prominent role over motivic development.
