Keep up to date on new music, new contributors, and new happenings at ThatNewMusicWebsite.

I’m Chris Brubaker, founder of ThatNewMusicWebsite.com. I started this website because new music stuff can be a pain in the neck to find, publish, buy, and sell. I got the idea for this site in the summer of 2007. At the time, I was having trouble getting my hands on a score of Louis Andriessen's De Snelheid. I had been in a seminar with Ney Rosauro recently, and he told us how much money—thousands—he had paid to buy back his pieces from publishers. And that’s when I realized that there had to be a better way. New music is too often too hard to access, too timely to publish, too expensive to purchase, and too valuable to give the copyrights to a publishing company.

So, the idea for this website was born—a place where composers, performers, theorists, historians, and new music lovers could publish, see, hear, buy, read about, and download new music at the speed of the Information Age. Where composers, performers and writers get to keep the copyright to their work and get a bigger piece of the pie—where they don’t have to wait a few months or longer for their work to be published. Where anybody who wants access to new music can get it cheaper and faster, and a place where geographical distance in the new music community means a little less. You might not be able to make a concert in L.A. if you live in Boston, but you could watch it online if the composer or performing group uploads it.

I hoped to be able to create a website where all this could happen and more. A little over a year after the idea hit me, the website design was complete. I took a few more months to take care of all the content, policies, and making sure everything worked right. And now, I'm spending a lot more time reviewing works, publishing them to the website, and trying to make the site more streamlined, user-friendly, and helpful. I hope that in the future this website can become a place where works and performances can be commissioned, forums and seminars can take place, contests can be arranged, and a place where communication and awareness among the new music community grows. (How are you gonna do it?)

At ThatNewMusicWebsite.com, we’re dedicated to:

  1. letting composers, performers, authors, etc. keep the copyright to their work

  2. giving them more money (65% of the sales price)

  3. getting new music seen, heard, and talked about

  4. making music more affordable

ThatNewMusicWebsite.com absorbs all credit card fees and chargebacks, keeps track of all works sold, and markets your music so that you can spend more time doing what you do best, making new music. We make our money through anything left from a sale after paying the composer, performer, author, etc. and credit card fees.
